HERONS

its over. for the final one, i decided to rope in Jack Fabian to sing the other vocal. This was all done in two takes, with the last part being sung by James Trafford and Tom Price as well as me and Jack. I dont really have much else to say at the moment, its all over! Thanks for your comments and support throughout the next year, im going to be doing some kind of blog based thing next, so ill keep you posted on what happens. But for now, bye then. Enjoy all 52 covers that i made ( at least a few of them). MAD GREETS - MR BLISTER, GREG, JACK, MIKE, ROO, JAYNE,TOM, JAMES AND ANYONE ELSE WHO READS THIS. Thanks. Take care.

THE WIN A SNOG

two more to go.

i tried something different. i worked out the chords and basically made it up on the fly. so you are hearing me actually writing the song as its being played. again. one take.

starting to feel a little relieved/ sad that this project is ending. i think it was confused at the start, as i was a bit confused at the time, but as things have went on, i think i have became a bit more confident about what things i can do and not do. i think its been a good thing to do to make me realise that you can put things on the internet and not really care if they are perfect or with a full explanation of why they sound like they do or why they aren't as good as they can be. it can just be a thing that you either involve yourself in on some level or dont have an opinion of. much like the radio, or music channels, or anything else for that matter.

here it is.

NEVER MISS BEAST

this song is terrible. i can imagine ricky's smug shit face when he thought of the line ' i want crisps'. a damning indictment of the post-Jamie's school dinners backlash in the advent of the credit crunch.

its a hard one to work with. thats for sure.

I WANNA START A FAT

this song is vaguely christmas sounding in the chorus. and amazingly irritating, a bit like black lace in its rhubarb and custardness. jack fabian is currently busy doing stuff for an exhibition next week so i did this myself. its weak in a good way. ill find out where it is in london and let you know. the dude is sick at art. i love him.

p.s sorry jayne but i started doing the cover while we were on the phone so the first bit of it is my side of our conversation.. x

MOUNTING

I really like this song. i thought it was really weak but i am a pretty big loser for liking ridiculously over produced rock records. most biffy stuff has choruses with guitars that rival andrew wk.

i tried to do it quite faithfully ish this week , hope you like it.

not long left to go now, hope people are still enjoying.

i am, but ill be glad to have 2 evenings of my week back . x

I KICK A GIRLS

its too late and its been very busy. more of an experimental, segmented affair this week, and a bit of a rush. i think its got some good bits. shes pretty hot like a hot adult film star. theres crazy amounts of vocal correction on the actual song so it sounds like a vocoder. but i think its a pretty alright tune.
cherry chapstick by yo la tengo is better though

I LIKE YOU WHEN YOU ARE WEAPONS

zeugma, london road sheffield

after several pints in a glorious sun trap at the bottom of london road (dulo), we headed east towards a turkish restaurant. the walls were littered with praise for their hearty portions ,delicious house specials and constructive criticism regarding their lack of ability to accept card payments. as soon as we were seated we were served with complimentary gherkins, black olives and traditional homemade breads. as complimentary appetisers, these were sublime.

for starters, i chose the grilled haloumi with a side salad, as i was eager to try this. although somewhat more salted than i had anticipated, along with the ripe tomatoes and crisp, fresh iceberg lettuce this tasted fantastic. she chose the aubergine salad, which again was cooked fresh and was delicately spiced in a most appealing fashion, towering with paprika and lemon.

for main courses we chose a traditional lamb casserole-esque dish ( the name escapes me) and her the traditional vegetables stuffed with spiced lamb and rice) with a marinade .all courses were delicately flavoured, although with a deceptively spicy after taste. all this was washed down with a crisp, chilled bottle of EFES.

CHOSER

apologies for the brief nature of this cover, i have to move house and clean old house and practice for gig friday and arg. i also got some new pens so i have been trying out drawing with them. not sure if ive sold out yet.
ive also spent all weekend scanning 600 pages of biro scrawled a4 for a video of my band. so im pretty sick of the sweet heady smell of biro for now.

VIVA THE VIDEO LOCUST

here is my effort.
the songs a bit repetitive isn't it? i took the 4 chords and dropped more stuff out of it and brought stuff back in. im pretty happy with this one.
its the second time in like a month ive had to mess with this lads band.
oh andddd
i have a new laptop. i dunno why but its better.
not much to report this week, i think that basshunter is an awesome man, having seen his skills on that nokia program.

WE ARE A PEOPLE

cover here: we are the people

quite nostalgic hearing feeder, even though its ages since they did something good. reminds me of the summer before i went to university many years ago, playing cricket on fields and getting my young fake scottish skin lobster red. its funny how people seem to pine for their lost youth at the same time. its only recently i have caught up with some of my good friends from back home ( corby, northants) that i hadn't seen in ages, and had an awesome time. maybe its the fact that we are all approaching 25 and can no longer call ourselves 'young' adults. maybe its because we feel guilt at not having spoken to them since we parted and went our seperate ways. but i think its because you realise that true friends are those who you can always go back to where you left off with, and you kick yourself for not having been arsed with them for so long. this one is for my corby pals.

ive realised ive started to write like im on massive amounts of anti-depressants. but im just happy.

views on the baritone voice on this cover ? y/n or n/a ( not arsed)

either way ill probably not listen to good advice.

TAKE A BRAW

RIHANNA is probably the most difficult word to spell in the world. and i cant say the word 'thistles' right anymore.
leona lewis may be ursurped by rihanna as things stand at the moment. i am pretty much in love with her hair. im thinking of growing it out rihanna style from the get up i've got going on at the moment. anyone have any views on this? if you know me like.
i really liked this song, but decided to try something without drums on for the first time in ages, and kind of made it really droney and repetitive( i just took the chord progressions throughout the song and repeated them in cycles against each other). and i put the vocals quite high. again, only one take, but thought it got better as time went on ( all 2 mins of it!)
i am happy. hope you all are too!

THAT IS NOT A NAME

this song. have listened to it a few times and its not that annoying.. having listened to a lot of pop music i realised that there really is a lot of repetition going on. theres basically two chords and the same drum beat throughout. but people dont mind. i guess they arent fussy. its all about the lyrics though. i can relate because everyone of the names are not one of my names so i can sing this song from my heart ( p.s my name is warren).
enjoyed singing this one, again i just built around the two chords in a schaffel techno style. which turned a bit basshunter, but i looked into it its fine.

VOLE NOT HIT

yeah its on the nme if you wanna buy that. i didnt.
the songs got a nice chord progression, but having got back from the pitchfork atp, and preparing myself for the explosions in the sky one, i dont really feel much like going into it in much depth, or speaking too much about music. but it was awesome. deadly awesome.
things i learned this week :
- throwing up outside a motorway travel tavern and having a whippet called Jessie eat your sick while you are still being sick is not as embarassing as you would think.
- i shall never own a moustache of any suitable caliber.
- massive shorts and enjoying yourself are much more fun than looking neat.
- i have some of the best friends ever made.
this one is for them. all of them.

KENNY RONAN AN TRAM MICRO DAIRY LINES

short and brief this one. not too keen on the actual song. is this gym class guy emo or have i got something wrong ? i mean shit new emo and not old good emo like i like.
yeah, i have kind of got over my bitchiness on this project.jess, when you saw me i think i was in need of food and bed after a days drinking session, so i was being a bit wank. the project shall continue. in the interest of managing expectations, i have a weeks holiday with the folks at the end of july, so i think it may mean that i miss one week and do 2 the next week? we shall see though. we shall see. THE PROJECT SHALL CONTINUE.
p.s have you heard that fergie and nelly song? sounds proper hostile and fergie has her vocals pitch shifted real low like a death metal band during her rap. its the first time that the hits has unnerved me . ever.
love you all.

WEARING MY DULUX

im a bit less angry this week. partly due to more sleep and jack recording this for me when i couldnt work the computer.
this song is dedicated to the boy jack fabian. i love him.
hes pretty much invested a lot of his effort in helping host and record all this guff. he is boss. i did punch him in the shin pretty hard tho.
this is the 26th cover of the year, which means we are half way through, and have only another 26 until i do something else. im not carry on .
could i have views on my impression of alex turner in the last 30 seconds of this song?
p.s i think this song is ace. the 7 minute extended versions much better, and the radio edit is too brief.

CRIME FOR YOU

this bronski beat meets panda bear meets kompakt cover comes your way via an inability to listen to the song all the way through. immediately after seeing the fact it was on hard2beat i thought it was going to be wank. i am quite conscious of the fact however that im slipping into a house style of making each song sound the same , or my way of it sounding, much as stock aitken or waterman or a lot of the italo disco stuff on ZYX in the 80's sounded. exactly the fucking same. i suppose i am just using a gameboy, so i have an excuse tho.

oh. if you are interested in what i look like im on this video singing leona lewis:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRtM8nZgO54

although i now dont have glasses and paid money for a real person to cut my hair and make up lies to try to impress me ( example: yeah me and my m8s went to latvia on a stag weekend. i warned the lads not too, but one got done out of 10 grand on his credit card in a strip club) BULLSHITS MATES.

i would have been more impressed if he just told me he couldnt handle his booze and ended up going home early every night.

I WANT TO MAKE CLUBS IN THE CLUBS

Dear Usher and Mr.Jeezy,

i am writing to you to pose several questions to you upon listening to your song once. the first being:

1. are you aware that the hoover synth sound that you used on this song is probably my least favourite keyboard line of all time?

2. do you not find it innappropriate to refer to ones self as daddy during sexual intercourse? on further reflection i find it to be one of the most innapropriate things i could say during said act.

finally i wish to congratulate you on your desire to make relations in nightclubs. of course, as with most young people, i enjoy frequenting places of this nature regularly with the main aim of achieving said act. but to actually want to do so in the very location where you go to have the oppurtunity to perform sexual acts at a later date! oh sir usher, i doff my cap to thee. heaven knows i have a hard enough job completing this act in a safe, warm enviroment away from the stressors of spilt pints of watered down carling and lukewarm r n b songs such as yours. i am in admiration of you.

your pal,

im unsatisfied by the lack of sport related content in the official song for sport relief. at least they could have dubbed in some colour clips of her seeing how many keepy ups she could do, or hire in 'stryker' who was used in the man utd fa cup song a few years back.

here you.

OPENING HORSE

hello there,

highest new entry this week is we are scientists. kind of did a bit of a reworking here. i really liked the main guitar riff, and this goes on all the way through on the original, so i kind of went with this. i used a really fast arpeggio to make it sound like that kind of shoegaze wash sound. and then laid the riff over the top all the way through. lyrics wise, i just took the first lines:

this door is always open
no one has the guts to shut us out.

as the song sounded quite triumphant, like the end of a game, when i had reworked it. i decided not to bother with the rest of the lyrics, as they didnt seem to fit in my version.

let me know what you think.

p.s i havent had much time again to watch or do anything except study, so i havent got a lot else to say. unless you want to know about XML Web Services. and i dont really want to talk about them. so there.

MY DESTINY

HELLO there.

This weeks effort is the highest new entry, which is Delinquent feat. K-Cat. This song has apparently been kicking about for say 4 years. I dont know how i feel about it, seeing as it sounds almost identical to that heartbroken one. But i like this better cause it has a dive bombing sub bass line half way through which for some reason reminded me of Kerry Kings guitar work, and some nice bits of square wave staccatoness in the chorus.

Apologies for the lack of having much to comment on at the moment, studies and other musical commitments mean that i have to try and prioritise other things a bit more. SOZ.

This weeks cover version again was done in one take, save for the other overdub. Seeing as Jack was out somewhere and I was too impatient for him to get back ( a wise move seeing as he has been out all weekend) i decided to record this myself. I couldnt work out how to make the line in record , so simply used the onboard microphone on his Mac and ramped the volume and overdrive up on a cheap marshall amp , and sung over the top of it with another cheap amp adjacent to it. I think having listened to the Times New Viking album i fancied doing something that was terribly recorded. so there.

i cant think of anything else to say at present. sorry. normal service will resume at some point x

MERSEY

Duffy is number one this week. the song sounds like watching a video of the 1960s with mute on. I saw this on t4 once and had no opinion. yet again, i missed the brits. its not been the same since sam fox presented it. that was some quality gear. i went to manchester instead. all i know is that leona lewis came home with jack shit and amy winehouse got talked about( husband in prison, gets hard prison men signed pictures of his wife for smack, she occasionally doesnt look her best). in the past week i have been to germany to see friends and we discussed kate nash's inflections at the end of a lot of words ( bittAH, fittAH) in depth. I say in depth. I think we just made the same joke over and over again and stretched it until it became unfunny and then funny again. the circle of life.

here is my cover again.

the sound at the end is me dropping the microphone onto some percussive things. if you are bothered.

and im actually using a different model of gameboy now (original brick size as opposed to gameboy colour) which has a lot less hiss and more bass on it due to a better sound chip or something. bothered.

YOUR TURN: why do i find amy winehouse attractive?

THE PRIZE FOR BEST ANSWER: a cover of any song you desire.

READY FOR A FORCE

credible songs to cover.. woop.
i thought that over and over was great, but the song is busy with little analogue bits on it here and there, too much periphery dossing around , so in my opinion it doesnt really have a clear build up to the chorus (which is pretty fucking great) so it just kind of just,,, starts, its kind of like one of stock aitken and watermans more minor hits( donna summer, reynolds girls, sam fox- nothings gonna stop me now) .in my opinion. so i made it verse chorus, and then repeated it. made it simpler. vocals again done in one take, my practice version of trying to do some lightning bolt esque contact-mic primal screaming backing thing didnt work. partly because i was wearing a pashmina over my mouth and face like a hijab and not really trying hard enough to make it work. and the fact that it was a fucking stupid idea didnt help.
i think with trying to harmonise with my own voice i normally get it around the second verse. and i was right. i intend to listen to the song a few more times, i hear on good terms that its a grower, it doesnt really strike me as a single, more of an album track to be honest, and i was quite surprised by how high this was in the charts. roll on atp vs pitchfork, where ill probably not watch them and hang out in the arcades.

MEN AT WORK 1979

this is the best thing i have had to cover since leona lewis. songs fucking awesome. and the hyper fast vocals are dope and fucking shred.
its really been a pleasure to cover something which is half decent, and i think it shows in the enthusiasm. the newly enforced dogme rules of only having one take lead me to slow the song down a lot so i didnt trip all over my words, which i still did anyway( and covered it up with the other layer). but i dont really understand how they have marketed it. i covered the album version, but the freemasons radio edit is fucking rubbish. it strips the bhangra bit off of it which was dangerously close to panjabi mc' s 2003 hit "Mundian To Bach Ke(Beware of the Boys)", and leaves it sounding really bassy, like a club edit. but shit club.
the chorus has probably the best keychange i have heard , reminds me of when the theme tune to Turrican 1 on the Commodore Amiga kicks in, well Chris Huelsbeck. Well , its the best key changes since leona lewis. fucking awesome. so here it is. its songs like this that make listening to popular music and interpreting them on gameboy worthwhile, as my dad once said.
I AM HAPPY WITH YOU KELLY

CHASING THE PAVENEMTS

HERE IS ADEDLE HERE: CHASOING PAVEMENTS.

i really struggled with this song, i couldnt really get anywhere with it. i took the initial chord progression and then listened to the rest of the song once, and then forgot about the chorus , took the lyrics and did what i probably would have done with it.

apologies for the delay on putting this up, have been very busy all week with other musical things and couldnt get round to finishing this off.

again, this was one take for both vocals, which explains some bad timings throughout.

i think it works better with vocals quite high without any effects on.

enough talking about adele. the only thing that i have encountered this week is the jared leto '30 seconds to mars, 20 minutes of ang lee rip off , 10 minutes of credits and poor dialogue'

highlights indicating that jared leto can bridge the same singer/ actor gap as greats like bruce willis ( something blues with a boardwalk in), eddie murphy ( party all the time, probably something offensive about aids or gay people) or that fit one from hollyoaks who went on a cruise ship but was in allstars include these gems:

jared leto examining a map, looking fit but confused: 'its like a map, so bizarre'

jared leto examining a scroll outlining what gift he has recieved, looking fit but confused: ' this is a gift?'

its on youtube, predictably: A + B

comments , feedback etc always appreciated and occasionally acted upon.

love you x

SUPERBSTART

BASSHUNTER IS NUMBER ONE AND HE IS GORGEOUS AND THE HIGHEST ENTRY IS LUPE FIASCO. HERE YOU GO MATE. its all change in the charts this week, good old britney's ket adventure putting her in good stead in the top 5. leon jacksons gone already, very sad times for music yes right there.

so , onto the song. ive changed the dogme rules again to make things more interesting.
from now on, its going to be the first take of the lead vocals and the backing. im not allowed another chance at it. its what ive been doing for the last few weeks anyway.
the last few have been pretty straight up, faithful -ish covers, but i thought id just take the chord progression and make it as fennesz esque as you can on gameboy. for some reason when you switch between different things too much on different channels sometimes it can glitch and go a bit mental. have no idea why this is, but it happens on the last chorus, and i think it sounds pretty boss. if you like that kind of thing. if you dont, sorry for everything.

having currently played the last gig in my old band, i am struck with the realisation that in the mean time, the only things i really do involve cover versions of pop songs on gameboy. i think this is a good thing.

so, onto other pop news. amelle from t' sugababes has smacked some lass .
shes in trouble with the police. i think i could be the person to tame her wild ways. perhaps i would take her to ferry meadows or perhaps to woburn safari park as these are calming places, and then i could play her some slowdive and my bloody valentine perhaps and she would perhaps join a new band. perhaps.

bye again.

WERE AER YOU GOIN

leona jackson ( see what i did there) is still at number 1, so this weeks highest new entry ( on downloads alone! imagine people downloading real music in a chart) is basshunter, with now you're gone at number 14. im not a fan of correct punctuation in a song title. apparently this little babe outsold abba in his native country of sweden. personally, i warmed to the guy. he calls his album lol <(^^,)>, has this on his myspace profile to indicate him on li'l headphones:
d[-_-]b
and writes songs about a bot on IRC. Guy sounds hella fucking sweet dude so far, but bam! check the photos the dudes a fucking swedish fox. he dont need no bebo and shit, guy could crack open stockholm with those bangs and girls be going mad crazy.

guys a poseur, right?
who'd waste time on teh internetz when they had a sweet bod like that .

HALLY NEW YEARS

highest new entry this week is that mika lad. it got to like 70 something, even though its a re release and its not actually out until next week, its doing alright. having listened to nothing but italo disco since the new year, i made this ham fisted attempt at it. lot of repetition on this song, based around 4 key themes:
playing with fire
a train
being scared
relaxing

no, i dont think its ridiculous in the slightest. took me two attempts to get the vocal because i pissed myself reading the lyrics the first time. have to maintain some level of professionalnesses. i basically just took the keyboard line and bassline. from the intro and rocked it minimal style. was quite tempted to slip into a bit of dave gahan.

thats the last time i use that phrase, ever.

a new year is upon us, and so ill put forward a few top 5s because everyone is doing it.
